I’m as open-minded, switched-on and metropolitan as the next man – providing the ‘next man’ isn’t a cabinet minister – yet I confess: I’m a little suspicious of meditation and mindfulness. Not suspicious… scared, maybe? Meditation always seemed slightly naff, like something self-appointed ‘cool dads’ at the school gates would do – you know, the guys desperate to be referred to as DILFs on the mums’ secret WhatsApp group. Mindfulness, then, was the domain of ‘follow your dreams’ enthusiasts – the ones who mysteriously manage to buy £700,000 houses aged 23, polluting newspapers with their “how we did it” stories (spoiler: their parents did it). More than a couple of friends have told me in the past I should give mindfulness a go; anyone else would pause to wonder what needs fixing, but I’ve yet to meet a critique I can’t ignore.
